Party city closing

Party City, a leading U.S. party supply retailer, has announced the immediate closure of all its stores after nearly 40 years in business. CEO Barry Litwin informed employees on December 20, 2024, that the company would cease operations due to insurmountable financial challenges. Employees were told their employment and benefits would end that day, with no severance pay provided.

The company, which once operated over 850 stores globally and employed approximately 16,300 people, has faced significant financial struggles since the COVID-19 pandemic. Earnings plummeted from $118.5 million in 2019 to $2.4 million by the third quarter of 2022. Party City filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 2023, closing 22 store locations, and emerged from bankruptcy in September after reducing about $1 billion in debt.

Despite these restructuring efforts, the company continued to face challenges, including increased competition from major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Target, as well as changing consumer behaviors and economic pressures. These factors ultimately led to the decision to wind down operations ahead of the holiday season.

As of the announcement, Party City's website remained active, but it is expected to shut down as the company completes its wind-down process. The closure of Party City adds to a growing list of retailer bankruptcies in recent years, reflecting the ongoing challenges faced by traditional brick-and-mortar stores in the evolving retail landscape.
